During her time there, she had the privilege of studying under the guidance of three esteemed gold medalists from the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show. Additionally, she had the opportunity to learn from the late John Brooks, a renowned authority in gardening who had authored numerous influential books on the subject. To further enhance her expertise, Emily dedicated herself to a comprehensive three-year design course at Temple Square, where she had the privilege of being mentored by the late Peter Lasik. This invaluable experience provided her with profound insights and refined her skills in the field of landscape design.
Emily’s passion for gardening was instilled in her by her late mother, Charmaine, who passed down her love for landscapes and flowers. Emily cherishes this legacy and has continued to nurture her own children with the same appreciation and affection for the natural world, ensuring that her family’s bond with landscape and flowers remains strong across generations.

Gabriella Merza USU Extension
Gabriela Murza received a BS in Psychology and MS in Health Education and Behavior, both from the University of Florida. She has worked in the public health field for 20 years in domestic and international roles, in which she implemented and evaluated programs that empowered youth and adults to adopt positive behaviors shown to prevent or delay the onset of chronic conditions, increase physical and mental resilience, and decrease food-related illness. She carries this experience into her current position with Utah State University Extension to promote positive behaviors to develop mental and emotional resilience, reduce stigma around mental illness and substance use, and improve physical health to manage chronic pain and prevent injuries.
Gabi currently serves as a county Health and Wellness faculty with USU Extension’s Health Extension: Advocacy, Research, and Teaching (HEART) Initiative, which addresses the opioid overdose crisis and other public health issues through work in four main pillars: Education and Prevention, Community Collaboration, Stigma and Harm Reduction, and Resilience Development. Her main areas of expertise come through in several successful programs, including a low-impact strength training program for older adults that helps improve their ability to engage in activities of daily living, injury prevention programs that teach proper techniques in labor-intensive activities to reduce the risk of injuries, and opioid overdose response trainings to teach individuals and organizations how to respond to an opioid overdose quickly.
